This post is intended as a reminder for myself. Not for public consumption, but you may read it. Do not follow. Consult with your doctor.
There are 3 kinds of pain medications I like to remind myself. Motrin, Tylenol Extra Strength, and Morphine. (Side note: There are generic for Motrin & Tylenol).
Motrin helps with inflammation, fever, and headache. For this patient, it made her extremely tired and bleed. So it did not work on her, and it was stopped.
Tylenol Extra Strength works extremely well on this patient and it has no side effects. She took 2 pills each time, 3 times a day. 1000 mg total each time.
When patient’s pain escalated, she start taking morphine. One major drawback of morphine and most narcotic is that it cause constipation (inability to poop). But, morphine works extremely well on managing pain. However, it is critical to have all remedies to alleviate constipation ready prior to administer morphine or any other narcotic.
Remedies for Constipation:
Stool Softener – Take it nightly to regulate bowel movement. (Not very effective on her)…took 1 pill nightly, will increase to 2. (500MG total).
Home remedies to regulate bowel movement – Eat dry prunes, and Chinese herb with laxative (Thai brand – BAI KAEW BRAND PILLS) – 4 pills daily.
Remedies of Last resort – Cause immediate Pooping.
1. Milk Magnesium (Liquid) taken by Mouth.
2. Suppository – Insert in Rectum if Milk Magnesium does not work.
3. Last-of-Last resort: When all else failed, use ENEMA Rectal solution. Squeeze solution into rectum; refill bottle with warm water and squeeze into rectum. Should work in minutes.
Above remedies are all over-the-counter drugs. No prescriptions are needed. Please remember when it comes to old and sick patients (relative), manage their pain well, and make sure you have all the remedies to help them with relieving constipation.
Life’s essence can be boiled down to 2 activities. Eating and Pooping. Let us all feel no pain when our expiration date is approaching. We do not fear death. It is PAIN that we do not wish to endure, especially, gratuitous pain.
God bless.
